Overview

It is the last work from Ieoh Ming Pei, or I. M. Pei (1917-2019), the world-renowned Chinese-born American architect whose “life is architecture” (Asia Brand Ltd. 2026). Probably one of the most prestigious names of the 20th and early 21st centuries, the Pritzker Prize- and Royal Gold Medal-winning architect has been associated with the Louvre in Paris, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, to name just a few. This week we will introduce his final project in Japan for Miho Institute of Aesthetics – Chapel and stainless steel application to it.

Miho Institute of Aesthetics – Chapel

Miho Institute of Aesthetics – Chapel is located in the new academic campus of the Miho Institute of Aesthetics in Shigeraki, Japan. It serves as the school’s most prominent building, justified by its selective position atop a sloped incline and the deliberate contrast with its surrounding angular buildings in form. With an area of 1120 square meters, the Chapel is designed as a congregation space to accommodate 240 students for pray or meditation.

The Background Information of Miho Institute of Aesthetics – Chapel

It’s kinda like serendipity that I. M. Pei’s architecture life was commenced with chapel and wound up on chapel as well. Pei’s first work was Luce Memorial Chapel, Taichung, Taiwan, 1963 and last one Miho Chapel, Koga City, Japan, 2012.

Pei’s choice of this school chapel as his last project for celebrating his 90th birthday doesn’t seem completely arbitrary, as internationally celebrated architects believe that the highest quality building they aim for is most likely materialized with the highest construction quality in Japan (©Masatoyo Ogasawara Architects 2026). As conspicuous as its unique form and position, the Chapel of the Miho Institute of Aesthetics is the centerpiece of the entire complex, serving as its spiritual and programmatic heart.

Unlike the previously introduced renovation projects, Miho Chapel is an entirely new construction project which can be divided into 2 stages, with 2008-2010 as the design phase and 2010-2012 as the construction period. It was completed by architect I. M. Pei collaborated with local architects in Japan, such as Project Architect Hiroshi Okamoto, Associate Architect I. O. Architects and Local Executing Architects Masatoyo Ogasawara Architects. The project won several awards in 2013, such as 2013 IESNY Lumen of Excellence, 2013 IES Edwin F. Guth Memorial Award and 2013 IES Illumination Award of Merit.

The Design of Miho Institute of Aesthetics – Chapel

The simplistic design, raindrop shape, natural vibe that honors natural light, the curvilinear, the cold industrial exterior in contrast with the warm wood interior, all these elements come together to create a natural and tranquil space wearing a sculptural form. The simple and elegant design was inspired by folding a simple square of paper into a cone and the drape of an oriental gown. To optimize the design, the interior setting was equally simplified to a crowning skylight, only three lighting elements and the warm wood panels. The deceivingly simple shape was actually a complex structure, created via 3D-model CADs.

Stainless Steel Applied to Miho Institute of Aesthetics – Chapel

Miho Institute of Aesthetics – Chapel is a conical shaped building with stainless steel panels covered its exterior facade. According to ISSF (2025), there are 100 tons of SUS 304 stainless steel laser-cutting plates applied to the Chapel.

The exterior façade consists of trapezoidal stainless steel panels of customized dimension and finish. Generally, these panels measure 5.0mm in thickness, 600 to 1500mm in width, and 18.5m in length. The surface is a custom silky blast finish with an artificial passivation coat developed to enhance corrosion resistance of the stainless steel. Due to the extra length, these panels were transported over a 500KM journey from Chiba to Shiga by special trains with road permits over 2 nights for on-site assembly. The manufacturing company Kikukawa Kogyo Co., Ltd received JSSA (Japan Stainless Steel Association) Award for Excellence in 2013 because twisting to panels exceeding 18m in desired shape and finish were phenomenal, something that could only be possible in Japan.
