Overview
301 stainless steel is known as anti-fatigue austenitic stainless steel. With each cold work comes enhanced yield strength and tensile strength. This makes 301 stainless steel a good match for applications where higher loads is required. A stainless steel product made from 301 can carry 33% more stress than that made from 304, hence it can reduce the weight of the final product remarkably with less material. However, while the higher carbon content (in comparison with 304: 0.08% at maximum 301: 0.15%) enhanced its strength, its lowered chromium content (304: 18% ~ 20%, 301: 16% ~ 18%) altogether makes 301 significantly less corrosion resistant. Its susceptibility to carbide precipitation in the welds also are a consideration factor on your selection of stainless steel materials.
Features of Stainless Steel 301
Grade 301 is mildly corrosion resistant, hence it is not suggested to use under high-corrosion circumstances such as salts, alkalis, acids, reducing media and other harsh conditions. 301 stainless steel can keep its oxidation and corrosion resistance up to 843 ℃, suitable for continuous use at temperatures below 871℃. Type 301 also features quite high strength, able to withstand repeated wear and stress. This makes stainless steel 301 quite commonly used for fasteners, springs, and structural parts. The most common form is 301 stainless steel sheet coils and strips, available in annealed, 1/16 hard, 1/8 hard, ¼ hard, ½ hard, ¾ hard, full hard, super full hard (referring to ASTM A666).
