Overview
We cannot talk about auto exhaust pipe tube without a mention of stainless steel 400 series, like 409L, 436, 439 & 441. Among all, 409L is the most commonly used for this purpose but type 441 exceeds 409L in both corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance. Meanwhile, 441 stainless steel outperforms both 409L and 439 in high temperature strength. With the addition of two rare elements titanium and niobium, 441 stainless steel becomes a dual stabilized ferritic stainless steel with good weldability. Its higher content of chromium (17.5%~19.5%) also contributes to its excellent corrosion resistance. Although a ferritic stainless steel, 441 is as versatile as common grades 304 and 430 in that it can be used in the cold formed, annealed, or as welded conditions.
Features of 441 Stainless Steel
441 stainless steel features good corrosion resistance (high chromium content), oxidation resistance (high Niobium content), and excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking. This grade exhibits good high-temperature strength in exhaust gas environments, hence extensively used as automotive - exhaust system components. Type 441 has good deep drawing formability, good ductility, good weldability and good brightness.
Cold forming with a slight degree of deformation can be easily done on grade 441 at higher than room temperature, but sharp bending parallel to rolling direction should be avoided. 441 stainless steel presents weak magnetism under quenched condition, while increasing cold forming will increase its magnetism.
