Overview
Type 439 stainless steel is known as a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel with the addition of a maximum of 1.10% Ti content, making it less sensitive to intergranular cracking. It was developed in the 1950s, for use in direct-fired water heater tanks. Though this application was replaced by lower cost immersion equipment and glass-lined tanks in US, it continues the designed service in EU for the good welding properties and stress corrosion cracking resistance.
The high chromium content (17%~19%) gives 439 stainless steel good corrosion resistance, applicable to varied oxidizing environments from tap water to boiling acids to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Due to its improved weldability, stainless steel 439 doesn’t require annealing to restore ductility or prevent intergranular corrosion post welding.
Features of 439 Stainless Steel
439 stainless steel features excellent welding properties, good corrosion and oxidation resistance. The oxidation resistance is good at temperatures below 950°C. 439 stainless steel is also resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking, but this advantage will be offset by the improved tensile strength through slight work hardening. 439 stainless steel is often designed in applications where high formability and good corrosion resistance are required, such as automobile industry. Through thoughtful design, correct post-welding and when applicable regular cleaning, 439 can reach its optimal functions in chlorides. However, chloride concentration, temperature, PH values and redox potential are all considering factors when designing.
