Overview
Type 410S stainless steel is the lower carbon (C ≤ 0.08%) version of stainless steel 410 (C: 0.08% ~ 0.15%), designated for ease of fabrication. Here “S” stands for special low carbon content, limiting the material’s ability to harden. The low hardenability keeps 410S stainless steel from cracking when welded or exposed to high temperatures. 410S remains its softness and ductility even when subjected to rapid cooling from above the critical temperature. Unlike 410, 410S stainless steel presents complete ferritic structure and magnetism under annealed condition. Setting mechanical properties apart, 410S stainless steel exhibits similar corrosion resistance to that of 410 stainless steel and has good oxidation resistance. It can resist mild acids and through proper cleaning can sustain daily exposure to chlorides such as uses for food and sports related activities.
Features of 410S Stainless Steel
410S features similar mild corrosion resistance like those 400 series stainless steels, able to resist corrosion of light concentration to mild organic and mineral acids, alkalis, fresh water, and the like. It’s readily formed through spinning, bending or roll forming. 410S is not hardenable through heat treatment. Exposure to temperatures of 1093°C or above can incur embrittlement. 410S is always supplied in annealed or soft condition to make it less brittle.
The main difference between 410S and 410 lies in that 410S is a lower carbon modification of 410, a basic Martensite intended for general purpose uses. Unlike 410, 410S is not hardenable and usually supplied in annealed condition, easily formed through spinning, bending, drawing, and roll forming.
