For anyone staying in this industry, it is common sense that thickness 3mm or below belongs to 2B finish and above 3mm to No.1 finish. It is the default setting, that’s why it runs counter to intuition that stainless steel plate 3mm above can be required to be 2B finish. Features of Stainless Steel 2B Plate

• Cold Rolled. Cold Rolled Stainless steel plate is supplied in 2B finish and hot rolled in 1D or No.1 Finish.

• Standard Size. Stainless steel 2B plates are mostly supplied in standard size, with width*length commonly seen as 4’ * 8’ (or 1219mm * 2438mm), 5’ * 10’ (or 1524mm *3048mm), 1000mm*2000mm, 1500mm*3000mm. Cut-to-length plate seldom invites extra cost, but non-standard width can incur higher price resulted from cutting.

• Slit Edge. Stainless steel 2B plates are always supplied in slit edge with clean and tidy edge. In some cases, mill edge can come into play for sake of extra width.

For instance, width 5’ (1524mm) is always stocked in mill edge for great fluidity as it can be readily processed into standard 1500mm slit edge. However, some clients want slit edge for width 5’, which is split from width 1560mm mill edge. As the demand is relatively small, customization needs an MOQ of a whole coil at roughly 20-25 tons. In such case, most clients won’t bother to order larger quantity than required and wait for a longer time. They will reconcile with width 5’ mill edge, despite the perceivable oxidation line shown inevitably on the edge (as below photo).

• Thickness 3mm or Blow. Stainless steel 2B finish plates are always supplied in thickness up to 3mm by default. Above 3mmm will come at a price. At CIVMATS, uncommon stainless steel 2B finish plates are typically stocked till 10mm in grade 304 and 316L.

• ASTM A240 & A480. Qualified stainless steel 2B finish plates are supposed to conform with specifications of both ASTM A240 and A480. ASTM A480 should be specified clearly and separately when soliciting a quote to avoid loss resulted from ambiguity.
