Overview

Stainless steel wire ropes are corrosion resistant, flexible, strong, reliable, appealing and endurable in time, so their ubiquitous applications in all walks of life such as hoisting systems, bridges, architecture and infrastructure projects come as no surprise. This doesn’t signal that they are neglectable. Instead, stainless steel wire ropes are too important to be taken for granted. This week let us explore stainless steel wire ropes & fittings through the case of 316 stainless steel wire rope & fittings exported to North America from CIVMATS China.

A Brief History: From Fiber Wire Rope to Stainless Steel Wire Rope

It has been a long history before the common use of stainless steel wire ropes nowadays.

Wire ropes does exist early even before the Industrial Revolution, with ropes made of hemp fiber as the initial form, primarily in the mining industry. However, these fiber wire ropes tend to deteriorate and rot after frequent exposure to intense humidity associated with underground work.

The drawback of having to replace the fiber ropes often prompts people to seek alternatives. Add to that, the advent of Industrial Revaluation creates the demand for stronger and more durable wire ropes that embody larger loading capacity. A significant turning point that has changed the course of wire rope history is the invention of steel wire rope. In 1830S Wilhelm August Julius Albert, a German mining engineer first invented steel wire rope, which paved way for the development of heavy industries.

Albert’s invention was a steel wire rope with a hemp core, much better than the rope wholly made from hemp or natural fiber, but the hemp core made it susceptible to decay. To overcome the shortcomings, engineers tried different materials for the core, such as wire strands and fiber.

The steel wire ropes have dominated the market for over a century until 1930S when stainless steel wire ropes were developed. This new invention was partly attributed to the chance discovery of stainless steel by Harry Brealey in the 19th century as introduced in previous article “Why Stainless Steel is Corrosion Resistant?”. It was yacht racing that fueled the boom of stainless steel wire ropes in the early 1960S. All types of racing drove up the demand for better wire ropes, lighter, stronger and more durable applied as standing rigging on yachts. As galvanized wire rope required frequent dressing to prevent rust, it had to give way to stainless steel wire rope. Plus, due to higher modulus of elasticity, stainless steel wire rope could avoid the same stretching issue inherent with the earlier use of galvanized constructions.

Stainless Steel Wire Rope Features

First and foremost, stainless steel wire ropes feature excellent corrosion resistance, mostly supplied in grade 304 and 316, with 316 wire ropes superior in anti-corrosion performance. Second, stainless steel wire ropes are strong enough to handle heavy industry loading in a safe and reliable manner. Enhancing rope diameter with optimized construction can enlarge the loading capacity to the optimal value. Third, stainless steel wire ropes are flexible, consistent and endurable in time, which minimize time and efforts to maintain. Last but not the least, many designers prefer stainless steel wire ropes for aesthetics, apart from the above mentioned functional purpose, such as small-diameter stainless steel wire ropes applied as balustrade cables on balconies.
