Overview

We are what we eat. After coffee last week, let us embark on an exploration of some distinctive restaurant this week. That’s how the Monsieur Claude restaurant that we’d like to introduce comes into play. On this journey we will also elaborate on how stainless steel is applied to the building.

Monsieur Claude

Monsieur Claude is a cloud-like French bistro located in Rueil-Malmaison, suspended in the air and perched 14 meters above the ground. It is a brand new restaurant opened in June 2025, known for the bold spaceship-like design in terms of architecture.

The bistro is privately owned by the Bistrots pas Parisiens family, with the chef Danny Khezzar finalist of season 14 of Top Chef at the helm. Featured with the unique building, delicious French cuisine with an original touch, and lively music, Monsieur Claude never fails its customers patronizing for an unforgettable culinary experience.

The Story behind Monsieur Claude

Encouraged by the success of the existing restaurant Bistrot Micheline, Bistrots pas Parisiens decided to have a new one in Western Paris with an ambition to build a landmark. That’s how the suspended restaurant Monsieur Claude comes into existence, providing guests with extraordinary panoramic views and allowing them to immerse in a festive rooftop ambiance.

The bistro name wasn’t picked at random. Instead, the chef Danny launched a contest on Instagram, inviting suggestions from the Internet users. The competition promised the winner to get a table open for a year. It instantly ignited the public’s enthusiasm for the project with a rain of suggestions. The name “Monsieur Claude” actually pays tribute to Danny’s grandfather, a cook who owned a restaurant in the city.

Some words about Chief Danny Khezzar, known for his participation in Top Chef and Michelin-star at the Bayview in Geneva. It is indeed an impressive achievement for such a young chef, 28 year old in 2025. Danny also lives from his second passion of music. Such background information is deemed necessary as the theatrical decoration of the interior reflects his two passions, cooking and music. Meanwhile, his young age contributes to the chic and cocktail style menu and cuisine designed by him in a nonconventional and creative way.

The Design of Monsieur Claude

Monsieur Claude was designed by French studio Hamonic+Masson & Associés. The dining space is famous for its unique façade made from metal tubes, creating a fantastic cloud-like envelop. The sensation is further enhanced by the color-changing illumination and a fog system equipped as a whole.

Monsieur Claude has to be eye-catching to transform the urban area into dynamic cultural hubs and foster community interactions. Integrating the sculptural elements in such a design will surely do and moreover blur the lines between art and functionality. As said by Arnaud Grenié, the architect from the studio, “With its sculptural effect, we definitely aimed to create a bold signature on the square, to convey new emotion and poetry to the site." (Tom Ravenscroft 2025)

The restaurant is designed to raise two stories in the air with a publicly accessible rooftop terrace on a metal structure illuminated with 180 lights, looking like a cloud. A water mist will be produced in the warm season to cool the surroundings such as the square and the park and bring refreshing airy feelings. With the lights on in the evening, Monsieur Claude is ready to turn itself into a shimmering chandelier.

While creating the dramatic architecture, the suspended structure also fulfills another purpose. Since the plot of Monsieur Claude is located between a park and the newly constructed square, a building raised from the ground floor can block the route between the two, as justified by Arnaud, “We felt that lifting the building above the ground floor would be beneficial to both public use on the square level – visual continuity to the park, providing shelter and a playful ground – and the restaurant itself.” (Tom Ravenscroft 2025)

The striking contrast between the futuristic exterior and the retro interior is another design highlight worth mentioning. From the outside, the atypical restaurant looks like a spaceship coming from the future that encourages guests to turn around. When stepping from the elevator to the inside, the guests feel like leaping back in time to the Roaring Twenties.

The tone is set like a 1930s restaurant and bar, with waiters in suspenders.

Stainless Steel Applied to Monsieur Claude

The cloud-like sculpture surrounding the Monsieur Claude restaurant is made from 3240 stainless steel tubes, completed in collaboration with the engineering firm Bollinger+Grohmann in 2024. Despite lack of literature review for the supply of these stainless steel square tubes, we can judge from the photo that these tubes were produced per ASTM A554 or equivalent specifications, with the outside wall polished into mirror finish, shining and reflective for decorative purpose. Grade 304 can meet the designed purpose, but 316L will endure.
