Overview

This is another stainless steel project from Mexico following the case of the world’s longest Pier of Progreso Pier introduced six months ago. This week let us explore the Mexican art and history through the Torres Bicentennial Museum and how stainless steel is applied in its architecture.

Torres Bicentennial Museum

Torres Bicentennial Museum is also known as the Bicentennial Towers Museum in English, but in Mexico it has been officially named Museo Galería de Arte Mexiquense Torres Bicentenario.

Located in Toluca, Estado de México, Torres Bicentennial Museum has been a local landmark which logo can be seen everywhere in the city (Chris Reisender 2024). The Museum consists of two 65-meter stainless steel towers, positioned on a round base measured 31 meters in diameter.

Torres Bicentennial Museum is a good venue to explore the Mexican art and history for it holds both permanent art collections and special exhibitions which include two rooms, one for the Sala de Exposición Colectiva (the collective exhibitions) and the other for the Sala Mayor (the Major) exhibiting works by Francisco Toledo, Vicente Rojo and more (MuseumsMexico 2025).

The exhibition rooms are categorized into four themes related to the state’s history, with the first covering 1778-1821 “The Struggle for the Nation”, the second 1821-1867 “The Independence of Mexico”, the third 1867-1910 “Three Years’ War” and the fourth 1910-2010 “Identity, Modernity and Present” (Destinations Mexico Program 2024 & MXCity 2021). The Museum narrates the history of the State of Mexico from its colonial period to the contemporary era.

To enrich the visitor experience, the Museum also features a 200-seat auditorium, a bookstore, a souvenir shop, a graphic work shop, a cafeteria and a cactus garden (MXCity 2021 & Mexico Es Cultura 2024), apart from its exhibition hall.

Project Background of Torres Bicentennial Museum

Torres Bicentennial Museum was built in 2010 to commemorate the 200 years of Mexican Independence (1810) and the hundred Years of the Revolution (1890). The construction was completed with a total amount of $171.03 million pesos in a record period of 11 months.

In reality, the Museum serves beyond a monumental architecture. It is also an art museum that displays the deep connection between art and history, a vibrant cultural center that provides Mexican artists and creators a shelter to exhibit and sell their works for a career. All in all, the Museum also aims to promote an art market in the State of Mexico.

Prior to the construction of the towers, the Government of the State of Mexico hold a contest to celebrate the Bicentennial of the Independence and the Centennial of the Revolution via public works tender. The Mexican designer Architect Guillermo Malla López stood out from the competition for the proposal of the two intertwined towers with each divided into 100 modules (Digital Capital 2021).

The Design & Stainless Steel Application

Torres Bicentennial Museum was constructed with 304L/2B stainless steel sheets (World stainless Org 2025). The 100 modules designed for each tower constitute a nod to the 200 years of independence of the State of Mexico.

The design aims to evoke the traditional architecture of Mexico meanwhile paying tribute to the struggle for freedom. It winds up with a space “where the past and the present are intertwined, where tradition and modernity merge, and where creativity is celebrated in all its forms” (Plaza Chimalhuacan 2025).

Stainless steel 304L was chosen as the material firstly for its extraordinary formability. The intertwining structure shaping the complex three-dimensional curvature requires a material that is highly formable. Secondly, 304L/2B stainless steel sheets feature relatively reflective finish which can amplify the aesthetic appeal of the towers when illuminated at night shining from within. Lastly, 304L stainless steel is durable. The good corrosion resistance and the smooth finish can minimize the maintenance requirement subsequently.
