Overview
Stainless steel coiled tubes can be produced for civil applications like protective shells or/and industrial uses such as control line for petroleum industry or as chemical injection tubes. In contrast, industrial working environment is harsher and more demanding, which means the quality that meets fully civil use can not necessarily work well for industrial applications.
At CIVMATS, we have tailored solutions on stainless steel coiled tubes targeted to different industries on a case by case basis. This week we will focus specifically on stainless steel coiled tubes for high-end market through our case of stainless steel coiled tube exported to EU.
Features of Stainless Steel Coiled Tubes for High-end Market
• Grade. Grade can be the most efficient and fundamental way to judge whether the stainless steel coiled tubes are for general use or for high-end market. Generally speaking, grade 304 is the most commonly used for civil projects. For heavy industries like gas and chemical engineering, 316L is the minimum. Duplex 2205 is also common.
• Length. Extra length requirement such as 5000 or 10000 meters continuous length on one spool (welding on length is not allowed) is another feature of stainless steel coiled tubes applied for high-end market. For civil use, 100 meters or 200 meters are common.
• Performance Index. For stainless steel coiled tubes serving high end market, the performance index will be transferred into measurable values, such as working pressure and temperature range (e.g., working pressure up to 700bar & working temperature -45~370 degrees Celsius for TP316L/3mm*1mm coiled tubes).
• Packaging. For high-end market, the stainless steel coiled tubes will be wound on spools clean and tidy. For civil use, they are loose packed without spool, simply bundled with woven plastic bags. To reduce weight for air freight, wooden case can even be further removed, while for high-end market wooden case is standard packaging.
While the above features can be easily discerned, there are traits more subtle, or even impossible to judge. For example, all the required tests as below listed,
- • Flange Test
- • Flattening Test
- • Reverse Flattening Test
- • Hydrostatic Test @ ***MPA
- • Eddy Current Test (or UT test)
should be done per ASTM A269 & ASTM A213, or ASTM A789 to ensure quality can meet the standard requirements and also the designed applications. For civil use, some of these tests can be skipped over to decrease cost.
