Surgical stainless steel is also known as medical stainless steel. When increasing chemical components hang in the air, for example in some heavily polluted places even 304 will get rusted. For this, some high-end stainless steel will be made by 10% nickel to increase durability and corrosion resistance and it is totally free from metal ion precipitation. This kind of stainless steel is also called 18-10 stainless steel. You can find a description like “the use of most advanced medical stainless steel 18-10 material” in some of the tableware handbooks. Due to its durable and complete properties, it is mainly used in the fabrication of medical devices and tableware.

medical equipments using stainless steel

The main difference between medical stainless steel and non-medical stainless steel lies in the content of harmful elements contained therein. The harmful elements mainly refer to sulfur, phosphorus, lead, hexavalent chromium, etc. The level of harmful elements contained in the medical steel must fall below the national standard, while the non-medical grade is mainly made for industrial or civil use. Medical grade stainless steel requires high smooth internal and external finish (internally and externally polished) so that less medium will adhere to the body which will help resist corrosion. For another, the smoother the tube inner finish is, the less the liquid medium will retain there. This will be good for washing and cleaning, especially in the pharmaceutical and food industries.
