Since 2001, the apparent consumption of stainless steel in China (Mainland) has grown at an average rate of more than 30% per year, and it ranked first in the world for six consecutive years. In 2005, the output of stainless steel in China (Mainland) reached 3.16 million tons, surpassing the United States with a ranking of second in the world. Apparent consumption reached 5.22 million tons, accounting for roughly a quarter of the world's total consumption, with per capita consumption at 3.3 kilograms.
In the beginning of 2006, there was a huge turning point. The China (Mainland) stainless steel output reached 5.3 million tons, surpassing Japan; it ranked first in the world for the first time, with apparent consumption reaching 5.95 million tons. In the first half of 2007, the output of stainless steel made in China reached 3.5 million tons, a remarkable increase by 54% compared with the previous year. The self-sufficiency rate of stainless steel in China has reached 70%. Stainless steel made in China has changed from the import-oriented to the current self-sufficiency. Since 2010, the recovery of the global economy has driven the exports of stainless steel in China. The export volume of stainless steel strips increased significantly, and the import volume decreased. China realized net exports in stainless steel, and the net export rate increased significantly.
From a technical point of view, stainless steel production process technology in China is continuing to catch up, and even leads the development of the global stainless steel industry. The technological innovation represented by ferronickel instead of nickel plate, RKEF integrated process and cold continuous rolling technology have greatly reduced the waste of raw material and manufacturing cost of stainless steel. It led to the cost advantage of stainless steel made in China, driving the global price of stainless steel to drop sharply. In 2016, the net exports of stainless steel made in China reached a peak of 3.22 million tons. The high-end, specialty stainless steel products came to emerge, eliminating the needs of importing. The stainless steel made in China are hence favored by consumers from foreign countries because of its low price and high quality.
